Frequently asked Questions
What types of conditions do you treat?
At Root to Rise, we specialize in women’s health physical therapy, focusing on pelvic floor dysfunction, menopause-related changes, and neurological rehabilitation. Common conditions include urinary incontinence, pelvic pain, prolapse, constipation, postpartum recovery, and issues related to strength, balance, and movement.
What can I expect during my first appointment?
Your initial 60-minute evaluation includes a detailed discussion of your health history, current concerns, and goals. A physical assessment may include posture, breathing, core and pelvic floor function, and movement patterns. Together, we’ll develop a personalized plan to support your recovery and long-term wellness.
Do you perform internal pelvic floor exams?
Yes — when appropriate and with your full consent. An internal pelvic floor exam allows your therapist to assess muscle tone, strength, and coordination to guide effective treatment. However, it’s never required, and alternative assessment options are always available.
How is menopause related to pelvic health?
Hormonal changes during menopause can affect muscle tone, tissue elasticity, and bladder or bowel control. Pelvic floor therapy and menopause coaching can help manage symptoms, restore confidence, and support strength, intimacy, and comfort through this transition and beyond.
Can physical therapy help if I’m using Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)?
Yes — pelvic floor therapy and menopause coaching can be valuable whether or not you’re using HRT. Hormone therapy can support tissue health and comfort, while physical therapy addresses strength, posture, and pelvic function. Together, these approaches can complement each other to promote overall well-being and longevity. If you’re considering or currently using HRT, we’ll work collaboratively with your healthcare provider to ensure your care plan supports your goals.
Can you prescribe Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)?
No — as a physical therapist and menopause certified coach, Dr. Leone does not prescribe medications, including HRT. However, she provides education, guidance, and support to help you make informed decisions in collaboration with your prescribing provider. If appropriate, she can help you prepare questions for your healthcare team or coordinate care to ensure your treatment plan aligns with your wellness goals.
Do I need a referral from my doctor to begin physical therapy?
In New York State, you can begin physical therapy directly through Direct Access — no physician referral is required for the first 30 days or 10 visits (whichever comes first). If your care extends beyond that, we’ll help coordinate with your provider.
What should I wear to my session?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely — such as leggings, shorts, or athletic wear. You won’t need to undress completely, and your comfort and privacy are always prioritized.
How many sessions will I need?
Every person’s journey is unique. Some women find relief in just a few visits, while others benefit from ongoing support. Sessions may be weekly, biweekly, or monthly depending on your goals, progress, and schedule.
Do you accept insurance?
Root to Rise is an out-of-network provider, which allows us to offer one-on-one, individualized care without time limits or restrictions. We provide detailed receipts you can submit for potential reimbursement from your insurance company.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask that you provide at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice may be subject to a fee, as this time is reserved specifically for you.
